Phantom Tollbooth

JUSTER, Norton. The Phantom Tollbooth. Illustrated by Jules Feiffer. NY: Epstein & Carroll [1961]. 8vo, 256pp. Blue cloth pictorially stamped in white. Map endpapers in blue ink; 3 two-page, 26 one-page and numerous smaller b&w illustrations. Spine ends lightly rubbed, else a remarkably clean, bright copy in original color pictorial dust jacket (Light edgewear, 1 1/2 inch closed tear at top front flap hinge, 1 1/2 inch scratch at base of front panel, 4 1/2 inch by 2 1/2 inch panel nearly removed from top of rear yet repaired inexpertly with tape, spine a tad sunned, light soiling).

First edition. For Milo, everything’s a bore. When a tollbooth mysteriously appears in his room, he drives through only because he’s got nothing better to do. But on the other side, things seem different. Milo jumps to the Isle of Conclusions, learns about time from a ticking watchdog named Tock, and eventually embarks on a quest to rescue Rhyme and Reason. Somewhere along the way, Milo realizes something astonishing: life is far from dull. In fact, it’s exciting beyond his wildest dreams! Filled with wit, outrageous puns, and just plain good humor and exciting adventure, this is a beloved modern classic!
